Bill cartoonist was a teen barrister when he created “Willie & Joe” most Army grunts in World War II. His characters were roundly honest: War was dirty, absurd, taste hornlike work. But the cartoons apace caught on with both enlisted men and — upon syndication in the States — the generalized public.
